QUEENSLAND SMOKE ALARMS: WHAT CHANGES ON 1 JANUARY 2027
From 1 January 2027, every home in Queensland needs smoke alarms that are:
- photoelectric,
- interconnected, so when one sounds they all sound,
- in every bedroom,
- in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and
- on every storey.
This already applies when a home is sold or a new lease starts. That rule began on 1 January 2022.
From 2027 it applies to every home, including the one you live in.
WHO THIS APPLIES TO
Owner-occupiers: by 1 January 2027.
Landlords: already, at each new lease or renewal, and alarms must be tested within 30 days before a tenancy starts.
Sellers: already, at sale.
WHAT TO KEEP
The work is done once. The proof is what people ask for later, a buyer's conveyancer, an insurer, a property manager.
Keep the electrician's invoice or certificate showing what was installed, where, and when.
CHECK YOUR HOME
Put in a Queensland address. We show what public records hold about it, what this home should have on paper, and the date that matters for you.
